Amtal Islam

Amtal Islam, a mother of three children, was happily living in Sheikhupura with her husband. She suddenly faced unimaginable trials after the passing of her  husband due to cancer. Hoping to rebuild her life, she remarried, but her second husband harbored vile intentions toward her young daughter. Taking a brave stand, Amtal sought khulla (divorce). Her refusal to endure abuse enraged her husband, leading to an abhorrent act of acid violence against her.

In 2018, Amtal found a lifeline by connecting with DSF. She received   medical care and her children gained access to educational support. As her health got better she was also supported to complete a course in cutting and stitching.

Demonstrating remarkable resilience, she is rebuilding her life by earning a livelihood through stitching clothes for the women in her community. Additionally, DSF extended legal aid through its network, ensuring that justice was served. As a result, the perpetrator was sentenced to 24 years in prison, marking a significant step in Amtal’s pursuit of justice and safety for her family.
